Adeso has been strengthening rural livelihood and delivering innovative humanitarian aid and development programs for the past 20 years. Currently, we have programs in Kenya, Somali and South Sudan.The Mobile Non Formal Education (MNFE) is a two years project being implemented by Adeso in Marsabit County of Kenya. The goal of the project is to contribute to improvement of life chances of marginalized girls in pastoral areas of Marsabit County through the provision of non – formal education and vocational skills training. The MNFE project will target 300 children aged 13- 18 years in Marsabit County who have never been to school or dropped out of school. Out of the 300 selected and educated by the project, 90 will be selected to join vocational training and given startup grants to initiate some income generating activities. The project target beneficiaries will come from the larger settlement of highly mobile practicing pastoralists and transhumance pastoralists. 6 MNFE Centers will be established across the county, with teachers being recruited, trained on Pedagogical skills and given the responsibilities to manage the MNFEC. The project activities are aligned with the migratory patterns of pastoralists and their seasonal calendar to unsure their accessibility to an educational model that does not conflict with their livelihoods priorities and nomadic lifestyle. The two years MNFE project builds on the experience and lessons learned from the Pastoralist Youth Leadership (PYL) Project successfully implemented by Adeso in Somalia. The MNFE project, though aimed at reaching children who have never attended school and /or have dropped out, will target more girls (60% of the total beneficiaries) than boys, to increase the number of girls accessing education given their lower school enrollment to high school dropout rates. This is in order to address gender equality. Among others, the project seeks to address the following:Improved access for pastoralist's children to quality mobile non – formal education.Improved delivery, management and coordination of high quality mobile non- formal education.Out of school nomadic children's are enrolled in none formal education program and supported to transit into formal education and vocational training.Improved participation by children in the social and economic life of the community.The curriculum of conventional teacher training colleges in Kenya does not prepare teachers to deal adequately with mixed grades in one classroom. Therefore the purpose of the consultancy is to impart six Non formal Education Centre (NFEC) teachers with pedagogical skills which will also enable them to handle with mixed grade learners.SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENTTo assist teachers become more effective which will enable them to improve the learning outcomes of their studentsTo equip the teachers with the latest tools and techniques for effective teaching and training through discussions, group work, lectures, workshop exercises, assignments etc.Adeso is seeking a qualified consultant to conduct pedagogical training for six teachers. The project provides pedagogical training for teachers so as to make teaching at the Non formal Education Centers (NFECs) effective. In particular, the project aims at improving the effectiveness of the teachers while teaching the multi grade students, a system that is new to the teaching profession. The teachers will be teaching pastoralist children (level 2 and 3) with specific emphasis on quality instruction and learning in formal and non- formal schooling. In view of an intensive in service training, the trainer will have six hours of classes each day as per the schedule, followed by reviewing the progress and preparation required for the trainings.The consultant will be expected to undertake the following tasks:Prepare, coordinate and conduct teacher training to enhance the capacity of the teachers to provide quality teaching in the classroom and ensure children learn effectivelyAssess the training needs of the teacher and schedule the program accordinglyEnsure that the teachers acquire the necessary skills to become a teacherDevelop instruments to assess the capability of the teachers to determine whether they have received the essential skills required to teach mixed grades learners in one classroomEnsure and maintain discipline during the training schedules and adhere to the training planParticipate and support the development of all materials and instruments required for the trainingTogether with the teachers, plan and prepare all materials that will be required to conduct classes and assessments in the NFECsConduct a one day debrief meeting for the MNFE project staff on key aspects of the pedagogical trainingPrepare and submit a comprehensive, well-structured report of the training.The consultant will be supported by Adeso staff in Nairobi and in the field with technical guidance.The following services and outputs are expected:An Inception Report prior to the commencement of the training, explaining the detailed methodology to be used and a program for the seven days. However, Adeso staff reserve the right to make changes to the proposal and approve before the training commences.Debrief session and power point presentation to the Adeso programme team and MNFE Project implementation team.Develop a final training report in and share with Adeso.QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTSThe successful applicant should poses adequate experience to conduct the assessment and that meets the following requirements:Minimum MA in Education or its equivalentExtensive experience in planning and implementing teacher education/training programsGood understanding of student centered and individualized approach to teaching practiceCapacity to link changes in education system to changes in teaching practicesStrong technical background in the field of pastoralist education and demonstrated experiences in conducting teacher trainings in ASAL areasFamiliarity with development programming related to education and gender opportunitiesAll documentation related to the assignment shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Adeso.Applications should be submitted by 7th June 2014.
