Digital Online Campaigner

Full Time – 6-month consultancy contractThe African Media Initiative (AMI) seeks to strengthen the media sector, from an owner and operator perspective, so that it can play its full role in promoting social development and economic growth, and in empowering citizens to hold governments and other institutions to account.AMI is incorporated in the Republic of Kenya as a non-profit, non-governmental organization. To strengthen its institutional building, AMI is looking to engage a dynamic and self-motivated Digital Online Campaigner to assist in its portfolio of the organisation’s annual Forum – the African Media Leaders Forum (AMLF).The African Media Leaders’ Forumis the flagship annual event of the African Media Initiative (AMI), the continent’s largest association of media owners and operators. This year, the 7th edition will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 6-8 2014.AMLF is an important platform to discuss critical issues facing the media sector and the continent at large. The theme of this year’s edition is “Turning the Page on Hate Speech: The Role of the Media”. As part of the event, we will be launching a pan-African online campaign to urge media leaders, journalists and citizens across African to join the fight against hate speech.We require a dynamic and creative Digital Online Campaigner to work alongside the AMLF team in Nairobi, Kenya. This results-oriented six-month position (Monday June 16th 2014, ending November 2014) will report directly to the Events Director, who ultimately reports to the CEO.The digital online campaigner will be responsible for digital online campaign implementation across websites, email, social media and other digital platforms. Working closely with the Event Director and Designer, the digital online campaigner will help create and implement our campaign work and fundraising efforts.The position requires a basic overall understanding of digital communications technology (i.e. social media platforms, basic content management systems, CRM’s, SMS, and web management) and techniques.Interested candidates should include a cover letter with their application, highlighting their relevant experience and explaining their interest in the role.Help develop and implement campaign strategy, utilizing compelling tactics (via email, social media or other channels) that move constituents to actionCollaborate on the creation of campaign content, including drafting email and social media contentWork on campaign execution, including setting up email blasts, petition pages, and monitoring metricsWork with designer to create compelling visual content for Facebook and other social platforms to help promote our campaigns and fundraising work;Work with Designer to produce innovative campaign collateralMonitor, respond to and engage with supporter comments across AMI’s various social media communitiesCreate online advertising strategies to reach new targeted audiences and acquire new supporters with compelling online advocacy and fundraising campaigns;Work with outside vendor, consultants and contractors to help implement the aforementioned work within budget.Represent the organization at conferences, give presentations, participate in webinars on behalf of the organizationSuccessful applicants must possess these qualifications:1 – 3 years of experience in online campaigning -- including email marketing and fundraising; online media strategyExcellent writing and editing skills with strong attention to detailFunctional knowledge of online organizing platforms (e.g, Convio, Salsa, Blue State Digital) social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and SMSKnowledge of at least basic HTML coding skills;Background in and/or passion for media and human rights issuesStrong knowledge of African current affairsAbility to work well under pressure and tight deadlines, and stay organized to get a campaign out the doorBasic understanding of Photoshop not required, but a plus.Availability to travel often and sometimes at short notice.Interested candidates should submit electronic applications, consisting of a letter of interest (two pages or fewer) and complete curriculum vitae, in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF Format, to the following AMI email address by close of business on Friday, 30 May 2014: jobs@africanmediainitiative.org Please include the job title in the subject line.
