So far, programmes concentrated on TB and HIV in the slums of Nairobi and in Kajiado, while also providing humanitarian assistance in emergencies such as droughts and floods in Northern Kenya.In August 2012, Malteser International opened an office in Illeret, Marsabit County / Northern Kenya with the aim to address the needs of the pastoralist population of the area, by supporting sustainable solutions, drought resilience and disaster preparedness. To support our programme Malteser International is looking for a:Public Health Officer / WASH CoordinatorLocation:Illeret, Marsabit County, Northern KenyaReporting to:Program CoordinatorResponsible for implementation of a range of water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion initiativesPlan, implement, monitor and evaluation the project’s WASH interventionsMinister and supervise Hygiene PromotersSupervise and conduct Meat Inspection at the Illeret Slaughter HouseConducting water, hygiene and sanitation assessments including: baseline surveys, evaluations and EIAs.Collaborate with the WASH Technical Officer , Community Health Coordinators and relevant stakeholdersrepresent MI in meetings, conferences, workshops and other forumsReporting on Technical WASH activities with deadlines showing achievements against targetsWater, Sanitation and Hygiene PromotionSupervise Hygiene Promoters to deliver appropriate sustainable and environmentally friendly interventions that meet the needs of the local community on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.Oversee Operation and Maintenance of the Water SuppliesCoordinate households and families visits to promote healthy and hygienic behaviour.Ensure the development of strong relationships with the designated community groups in 13 villages of Illeret Ward.Ensuring that Hygiene Promoters deliver facilitated peer-to-peer hygiene promotion sessionsDevelopment of a programme for delivering hygiene promotion activities for childrenImplementing community hygiene promotion activities under the CLTS approach.Implement and evaluate capacity building programs for Community Health VolunteersHealth and Hygiene Promotion Campaign developmentThe PHO/WASH Coordinator is responsible for undertaking structured research and assessment of hygiene-related issuesHe/she is responsible for proposing creative and innovative ideas on how to deliver key hygiene messagesActivity reporting: The PHO/WASH Coordinator prepares accurate and timely reports of program activities results.Good communication skills – and ability and willingness to work with people in difficult personal circumstances, including cultural barriers.Respectful and appropriate attitude towards the local communityAbility and willingness to work in physically challenging field conditionsCompliance with MI security procedures and protocols3-5 years of field experience in ASALsBachelor Degree / Higher National Diploma in Public Health,Additional training in CLTS will be an added advantage
