Editor, BBC Africa Health at BBC World Service


The BBC World Service is the world’s largest international broadcaster, broadcasting radio and television news, speech and discussions in 29 languages to many parts of the world on analogue and digital shortwave platforms, Internet streaming, podcasting, satellite, FM and MW relays. It was announced in November 2016 that The BBC World Service will start broadcasting in Igbo, Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba and Amharic among others in its biggest expansion since the 1940s. The World Service reached 210 million people a week (TV, radio and online) on average in 2015. The English-language service broadcasts 24 hours a day.

Role Responsibility


As part of the senior editorial team, your role will be to lead the Africa Health Unit. You will need to have excellent knowledge of Health systems in Africa, global trends in Health and wellbeing, and a deep awareness of the evolving science, research and knowledge development in the Health sector. They’ll also need a  deep understanding of what audiences are looking for in digital and social media coverage as well as a real nose for original, creative journalism.


You will provide creative leadership and vision for the team.  You will have full editorial responsibility for the production of the Africa TV Health programmes in English, Swahili and French and daily news coverage of Health stories from the continent


This role is also responsible for managing the Africa Health team including recruiting and staff development.


The Ideal Candidate


The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a senior journalistic capacity, with fluent Swahili and English language skills.  A working knowledge of French is an added advantage. You will have extensive editorial experience of online and digital, with the ability to develop and implement new approaches to programme structure and content.


Demonstrable experience of commissioning and bringing to broadcast compelling multi-platform stories related to Health in Africa and African news and current affairs is essential.


To succeed in this role you will need to be an experienced editor, able to build a collaborative and supportive team to deliver creative, high-quality journalism that meets the editorial standards of the BBC and the specific requirements of our audiences.
