Senior Carbon Asset Developer at ClimateCare


Climate Impact Partners delivers solutions for action on climate. We believe that carbon markets have a critical role to play in delivering action by putting a price on carbon and funding carbon reduction projects to meet our global climate goals.


THE ROLE


This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of Carbon Asset Development (CAD) and Project Development services under recognised carbon standards. We are expanding our technical project development capability as client demand grows and are looking for someone to help us capitalise on our leading position in this space. The role is focussed on supporting low carbon projects with an initial focus on energy and safe water access though could potentially move into other sectors (e.g. Nature Based Solutions) over time.


Working closely with the experienced colleagues and predominantly the technical team in Nairobi, you will lead and manage delivery as assigned on:



  • Carbon Asset Development (CAD) services under internationally recognised voluntary carbon market (VCM) standards – validation, verification and ultimately issuance of high integrity carbon credits from international projects with credible implementing partners (expected 60% of time);

  • Origination, technical screening and full technical due diligence of carbon project development opportunities in energy, household energy efficiency and clean water (30% of time);

  • Due diligence on projects where emission reduction units are potentially being contracted (10% in time).


Reporting into the CAD Commercial and Operational Manager and with extensive interaction with the Projects and Technical Director, you will work closely with technical managers across the team and the broader experienced company team, including project development Commercial Managers and Portfolio Management colleagues. You will be a senior member of the team delivering the highest quality CAD services, contributing to relationship management with existing and new project partners and contributing to the growth of the project development portfolio.


In this role, you will be accountable for ensuring timely and efficient delivery of CAD services by the Kenyan office ensuring commercial returns and contributing to accelerated growth. You will play a leading role in further enhancing our award-winning reputation as a voluntary carbon market project developer through exceptional delivery and a forward-thinking approach to our engagement with our market leading implementing partners, to ensure long-lasting and productive commercial relationships.


RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Deliver CAD services under recognised VCM standards from validation to verification and issuance;

  • Work closely with project implementing partners to ensure that implementation is aligned with CAD requirements and to ensure the best commercial results for the project implementing partner and Climate Impact Partners;

  • Contract and work closely with third party auditing firms and VCM standards to ensure efficient and quality outcomes;

  • Develop a good commercial understanding of the CAD services you are delivering, focussing on contract delivery on time and within budget, whilst maintaining a view of future commercial opportunities with the project implementing partner;

  • Support the screening of project development opportunities by leading on technical evaluation and full technical due diligence, for example – assessing emission reduction potential, assessing key project risks, partner quality and approach to community engagement;

  • Contribute to the enhancement of the Project Development team by constructively engaging with the improvement of tools and systems;

  • Lead, where assigned, the due diligence of carbon projects from which emission reduction units are potentially being contracted;

  • Build and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant changes in voluntary carbon standards and begin to understand the Article 6 context of the work that you are performing;

  • Keep up to date with changes in voluntary carbon standards and support the team in maintaining its position as a centre of excellence; share your knowledge and experience within the team and company;

  • Undertake site visits for any of the work areas as necessary.


CAPABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE



  • A commercial mindset and experience in managing delivery of high quality and timely services;

  • 5-10 years’ experience in a related role in CAD and project development or related roles;

  • A degree, ideally a masters, in a relevant field such as low carbon, energy, water, Climate Change, Environmental Management or related;

  • Proven experience in preparing Project Design Documents and monitoring reports for Gold Standard, Verra or CDM, and potentially other recognised standards, from validation, monitoring, verification and issuance;

  • A solid understanding of the context of Carbon Markets within the broader Paris Agreement and Article 6 context;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written skills;

  • Understanding of key considerations for technical and commercial due diligence and project performance and delivery risks on the groundin order to inform commercial negotiations;

  • Experience working with local partners, with an understanding of the on-the-ground challenges and realities of project and carbon delivery;

  • An existing network in the low carbon and/or carbon market sector.

  • Able to travel internationally to project sites.
