Coordinator Community and Advocacy




International Justice Mission is a global organization that protects people in poverty from violence. IJM partners with local authorities in 33 offices in 23 countries to combat slavery, police abuse of power, violence against women and children, and other forms of abuse against people who are poor. IJM works to rescue and restore victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and help strengthen public justice systems.



Started in 2001, IJM’s office in Kenya works to combat police abuse of power against people who are poor, as well as sexual violence against children.



Inspired by God’s call to love all people and to seek justice for people under oppression, IJM works with local authorities to protect people in poverty from violence, without regard to religious background and beliefs or any other factor and seeks to work alongside all people of goodwill.



The successful candidate will be the focal point in grassroot mobilizing aimed at creating a social demand that will drive towards culture change in the National Police Service. This role supports the program in ensuring that National Police service upholds a culture of professionalism and respect for rule of law in the criminal justice system. The Coordinator Community and Advocacy will work collaboratively with partners in the establishment and strengthening of community justice centers as grassroot hubs for organizing and mobilizing advocacy initiatives to drive change within the justice system. The incumbent will also provide leadership in developing a coalition of partners to design, plan and implement joint advocacy initiatives. He/she will work to ensure that communities and the police have a positive engagement space that will allow for dialogue in solving crime and police misconduct issues in the community. Occasional travel locally may be required.



Education & Experience:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Community Development or Community Organization. MBA is an added advantage

· At least five (5) years’ practical experience in community development, advocacy, government relations, and grassroot organizing



  • Proven track record of successfully networking with government officials or with community organizations

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software and familiarity with statistical software packages

· Prior experience in advocacy, including the development and management of an advocacy strategic plan and coalition building



· Ability to present complex data and information in a clear and compelling manner to a wide range of stakeholders



· Proficient in group facilitation, with demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with partners, staff and colleagues with a high level of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality.
