The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks to recruit a Research Officer to work in a newly funded research project “Genomic and environmental risk factors for cardio-metabolic diseases in Africans”. The project aims to conduct a genetic association study with obesity, body fat distribution and cardiovascular diseases in Kenya as part of multi-country initiatives
Lead the process for obtaining ethical approvalDevelop study tools, training manuals and field guides to use for data collectionCoordinate the recruitment and training of the field teamCoordinate field work and be responsible for data qualityOrganize for the procurement and inventory management of study equipment,Oversee the collection, transport of blood samples from the field to the laboratoryOversee the processing, storage, and handling of specimens for genetic testing and phenotypingPreparing regular field and project reportsParticipate in data analysis and scientific writingOther duties as required.Masters’ degree in Public Health, epidemiology, biological sciences or related disciplinesTraining in laboratory sciences or demonstrated experience working in a laboratory settingFamiliarity with laboratory management and sample tracking systemsAt least two years’ post-graduate experience, preferably in a research settingExperience conducting field research and managing a research teamKnowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word and ExcelEvidence of scientific writing (e.g.peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, books, etc.)Experience using statistical packages such as STATA, SAS, SPSS, Epi-InfoExcellent oral and written communication in EnglishAbility to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks, meet tight deadlinesCandidates who meet the requirements above should submit their applications enclosing a detailed CV, quoting current and expected remuneration and providing contact details of
