Internal Communications Manager – Content and Channels at Plan International


Plan International was founded over 75 years ago with a mission to promote and protect the rights of children. The organisation was set up by British journalist John Langdon-Davies and refugee worker Eric Muggeridge in 1937, with the original aim to provide food, accommodation and education to children whose lives had been disrupted by the Spanish Civil War.


ROLE PURPOSE


Create and deliver content across all Plan International’s internal communications and engagement channels with a particular focus on People & Culture and organisation-wide values-based initiatives, while ensuring that all internal channels are technically robust, effective and work together to provide a consistently positive experience for Plan International employees across the globe.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Lead and drive engagement among our 10,000 staff worldwide including office-based, remote and hybrid workers. The role-holder is expected to make use of all available internal channels of communication and various methods of delivery (including blogs and video) to ensure that staff feel a sense of belonging, are well-informed and engaged.

  • Work with colleagues across Plan International to identify opportunities and contribute to a content calendar of key internal engagement moments for the organisation throughout the year, preparing detailed action plans to make the most of these moments to increase internal engagement.

  • Be responsible for success of our enterprise collaboration tool, Workplace (from Meta) creating audience growth and engagement plans with metrics; supporting other teams across Plan International to maximise its use. Lead the process of integration of Workplace content with other internal communications platforms.

  • Drive forward the technical evolution of Planet, our Sharepoint intranet platform as the leading organisational communications platform. Implement the better integration of Planet with other internal communications channels, using an evidence-based and analytic approach to measure effectiveness, working closely with the Content Management Officer (Planet).

  • Source (including commission), develop and edit content from across the organisation that brings out the human side of stories and provides an inclusive range of perspectives, views and experiences.

  • Work closely with the People & Culture department, developing detailed communication plans to help staff understand – and contribute to – the culture we are aiming to build; enacting feedback from staff surveys. Help deliver creative and impactful internal communications to further embed authentically our feminist leadership principles.

  • Facilitate and foster a culture of openness and transparency through internal communications, enabling other teams to do the same, while reducing reliance on global emails to communicate internally.

  • Enable a culture of working better together by listening to internal communications needs across the organisation, and identifying and delivering solutions to address them.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organisation to deliver regular and creative communications around our Anti-Racism and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Roadmap to help embed our Anti-Racism vision.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support communication of internal recognition, wellbeing and climate change initiatives, while reinforcing our values.

  • Work closely with the Executive Office Communications Advisor and Head of Executive Engagement to coordinate Senior Leaders’ communication with staff around key moments and initiatives, and our culture, including organising (planning, technical support, hosting and lining up speakers and content) regular all staff meetings.

  • Works closely with communications colleagues in our external communications and brand teams to ensure the external brand and content is consistently reflected in our internal brand experience.

  • Build and maintain a strong network of communications counterparts across the world in country offices, regional offices and national organisations (members), to collaborate, share information and build an overview of the organisation.

  • Work with all departments to celebrate success and engage staff in our values, contributing to a positive, collaborative culture at the organisation’s Global Hub.

  • Ensure that colleagues across Plan are aware of brand guidelines and act as an advocate to ensure they are used and referred to.

  • Ensure the Safeguarding Policy is fully embedded in accordance with the implementation standards as applicable to their area of responsibility. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring staff and associates are aware of and understand their responsibilities under the Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct (CoC), its relevance to their area of work and that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


Essential



  • Experience from organisations of comparable complexity.

  • Experience in managing and supporting internal communication and engagement, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, preferably in large international organisations.

  • Engaging and clear writing skills and style.

  • Experience in using software solutions to support communications and coordination across a global or large matrix organisation e.g. intranet, digital asset management systems etc.

  • Knowledge of using digital content management systems, particularly Sharepoint and digital content creation tools including video editing skills (Premier Pro)

  • Skilled at using Workplace (from Meta) as an enterprise social platform or similar social channel.

  • Knowledge of user experience, user interface and analytics of digital content platforms.

  • Strong collaboration skills and excellent interpersonal skills, working with people from different cultures with integrity and honesty.

  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and methodical approach.

  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.

  • Presence and subject area authority on digital platforms to gain trust from the leadership of the organisation.

  • A strong belief in the need for effective internal communications and the patience and flexibility to engender this belief in others to support cultural change.

  • A collaborative working style to encourage cross-functional (and where possible, cross-sector) collaboration and breaking down of silos.

  • Discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information.


Highly Desirable



  • French and/or Spanish language skills.


DIMENSIONS OF THE ROLE


The role holder is responsible for driving staff engagement with key strategic moments across multiple channels; leading on communicating the scope and ambition of our culture and values; and supporting teams across departments to communicate values-led initiatives. This role involves a particular focus on delivering and supporting communications around our culture and wellbeing adapting to evolving working environment norms. The role holder is also responsible for helping to support senior leadership to demonstrate and model transparent leadership through inspiring and clear messaging to all constituents. The job holds principle responsibility for our staff engagement platforms – Workplace and Planet, to grow engagement and a work towards better integration. The role will have a technically focus on remodelling internal communications channels user experience and performance analytics.

Location: Flexible location, in most locations where Plan International has a legal entity and you have the pre-existing right to live and work.


Type of Role: Permanent in UK or maximum length of contract permitted in CO/NO


Reports to: Head of Internal Communications and Engagement


Salary: We will be happy to disclose the salary and applicable benefits to applicants as part of this process, however, please kindly note that this will vary according to the location of the appointed candidate and therefore, it is not possible to include full details here. For candidates based in the UK we could expect to pay circa £40,000 – £45,000
