Senior Research Scientist/ Specialist at Kenyatta National Hospital


KNH has turned 115 years and it had its Centenary Celebration in 2001. The Hospital was built to fulfill the role of being a National Referral and Teaching Hospital, as well as to provide medical research environment. Established in 1901 with a bed capacity of 40, KNH became a State Corporation in 1987 with a Board of Management and is at the apex of the referral system in the Health Sector in Kenya. It covers an area of 45.7 hectares and within the KNH complex are College of Health Sciences (University of Nairobi); the Kenya Medical Training College; Kenya Medical Research Institute and National Laboratory Service (Ministry of Health). KNH has 50 wards, 22out-patient clinics, 24 theaters (16 specialized) and Accident & Emergency Department. Out of the total bed capacity of 1800, 209 beds are for the Private Wing. Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi is the oldest hospital in Kenya. Founded in 1901 with a bed capacity of 40 as the Native Civil hospital, it was renamed the King George VI in 1952. At that time the settler community were served by the nearby European Hospital (now Nairobi Hospital). It was renamed Kenyatta National Hospital – after Jomo Kenyatta – following independence from the British. It is currently the largest referral and teaching hospital in the country. Kenyatta National Hospital has a capacity of 1800 beds and has over 6000 staff members. It covers an area of 45.7 hectares. The University of Nairobi Medical School, and several government agencies are located on the campus.


JOB GROUP KNH 6 (1 POST)


An officer at the level will be responsible to the Deputy Director.


Duties and Responsibilities



  1. Promote research, innovation and technology transfer in the hospital

  2. Coordinate implementation of knowledge management strategies in the Hospital

  3. Participation in national health planning and policy formulation

  4. Implementing of the Hospital’s Research agenda including fostering collaborative interdisciplinary basic, clinical and operational research

  5. Participate in implementation of the Division’s strategic initiatives and  capacity building in line with goals and aspirations of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the National Health Sector Strategic Plans

  6. Responding to calls for national and international research funding applications and assisting researchers within KNH to develop their applications

  7. Overseeing conduct of clinical audits and surveys by surgical and medical departments in the Hospital

  8. Building research capacity of KNH staff and affiliates through training and mentorship

  9. Conduct, facilitate and manage collaborative research projects.

  10. Implementing advanced medical training programs in various specialities to build capacity of health professionals and ensure provision of quality specialized care


Qualifications and Experience



  1. MPH or MSC or a Master’s degree in a clinical discipline

  2. Bachelors in any of the clinical disciplines.

  3. Valid Practicing license from relevant professional body

  4. Registration Certificate by the relevant professional body

  5. Certificate in Good Clinical Practice

  6. Certificate in Protecting Human Research Subjects;

  7. A minimum period of eight (8) years relevant work experience with at least (3) years’ experience at the level of Research specialist or equivalent

  8. At least five (5) publications in peer reviewed journals
