Post Title: Outreach Officer

Job Purpose:
Forge links with civil society organizations’ in diaspora and local
communities that are genuine influencers and thought-leaders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead
on Diaspora and assist in local activities for the project in support
of AMISOM/UNSOM’s objectives for engagement with the Somali Diaspora. - Coordinate the media, products and logistics for AMISOM/UNSOM in Somalia Diaspora and International Engagement around the world,
- Create and implement the Information Support Team’s Outreach Engagement strategy.
- Draw up a plan for outreach engagement in line with the IST Communications strategy.
- Develop,
promote and deliver the IST’s outreach activities in line with the
project’s Diaspora and national Strategy and in support of
AMISOM/UNSOM’s efforts to create networks with the Somali Diaspora. - Developing
new partnerships with Non-governmental organizations, civil society and
– in particular those NGO’s that represent key audiences including
youth, elderly, students, family and women groups amongst others. - Compile and update the regional and Somali Diaspora network data for both the UN and AU engagement.
- Assist
the International Team with organizing and delivering five awareness
campaigns in Troop Contributing Countries and African Union. - In
line with the IST Communications strategy, develop new partnerships
with Somali Diaspora organizations and – in particular those NGO’s that
represent key Diaspora audiences including youth, elderly, students,
family and women groups. - Maintain the media network for Somali Diaspora engagement assisted by the Communications / Press Officer.
- Trace and report to the Head, Outreach on the key issues of interest on Somalia as gathered from the Somali Diaspora.
- Providing regular reports as required.
- Assist in any other tasks as assigned by the team leader.
Experience
He/she
should demonstrate working experience in working in a communications,
outreach and advocacy environment and ability to multi-task concurrent
assignments as follows:
- This
position requires a combination of leadership, expertise, analytical,
technical, and managerial skills. Proven coordination and organizational
skills within multi-cultural work environments are required. Strong
communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence
relationships positively. - The
incumbent must have excellent writing and reporting skills and be able
to work under severe time pressures. He/she must be familiar with and be
able to work well in hostile environment with a wide range of
governmental, non-governmental and corporate counterparts. - The
successful candidate will demonstrate experience in a time-sensitive
environment, and demonstrate knowledge and expertise regarding planning,
strategy, and adherence to policies and procedures regarding all
development outreach communications activities. Knowledge of
facilitating outreach activities and advice the Mission on the best
press outlets to use for given purposes is essential. - At least 5 years’ experience working in an outreach and advocacy environment
- Experience of project management and excellent analytical skills
- Excellent
written and oral communications skills in English, to deliver reports
and documents; candidates familiar with Somali language will have an
added advantage - Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office tools
Reporting: He/she will report to the Head of Outreach & Advocacy.
Location and Duration
The indicative start date is January 10, 2016.
The contract is expected to run for a period of year with possible extension based on satisfactory performance.
The contract will have an initial three-month probationary period.
The duty station will be at the MIA compound in Mogadishu, Somalia.
