We have created a new role of General Manager in the Nairobi Office who will be responsible for driving the business forward against some substantial growth targets in both the Climate and Development sides of the business through 2016 to 2020 and beyond.
We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong understanding of Climate and Development policy objectives within Donor organisations and IFIs, the interplay between them and the funding opportunities available.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate extensive experience in pro-actively identifying and navigating application procedures for securing funding for large scale project deployment in Sub Saharan Africa.
He or she will hold extensive current relationships within the different responsible organisations at National and International level and will work to raise ClimateCare’s profile in this space dramatically.
In addition, he or she will be responsible for the day to day running and cost management of the Nairobi office while identifying and driving new business acquisition within the company.
The Role
Reporting to the Board, the role will be to drive the operations of the Nairobi Office. Objectives to include:
- Development of the current and potential client base and the generation of new business to grow revenue and profitability for the office year on year.
- Ensuring the office then delivers contracts in an efficient, timely and profitable manner
- Identifying and developing new partnership and business opportunities within the Climate and Development sectors within the region and globally.
- Developing and enhancing ClimateCare’s existing relationships with Kenyan Government, Donor governments, IFIs, UN organisations, NGOs and corporates on matters relating to Climate and Development with the objective of securing more business.
- Managing and motivating the Nairobi team to update and feed into the company’s strategic plan, to achieve delivery of ClimateCare’s targets and objectives while assisting in the development of core skills within the team.
- Ensure the smooth running of the Nairobi Office
- Set out a structured process for enhancing communication, co-working and integration for all Nairobi team members with their counterparts in UK.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Business Development & Delivery
- Maintain and develop an excellent working knowledge and relationships with the broad current donor-finance landscape and understand the detail of opportunities available
- Develop relationships with the decision makers at the main development agencies in Nairobi, to understand their requirements and the tenders in their pipelines
- Work collaboratively with the Directors regarding their relationships with donor agencies overseas and react accordingly
- Keep up to date with the funding opportunities that are open and evaluate how ClimateCare can benefit from accessing these opportunities
- Keep up to date with the tenders for consultancy that are available and suitable
- Write both the technical and financial aspects of tender responses, drawing on knowledge from your colleagues and the accounting team
- Where necessary, collaborate with third parties to submit joint proposals
- Be involved in the negotiation of contracts for successful tenders
- Be actively involved in the delivery of the pieces of work that ClimateCare is contracted to carry out, whether that is project development work or consultancy.
- Plan and budget contracted work to ensure delivery and protect profitability.
- Be responsible for the management of such work to the agreed budget
Organisation
- Be responsible for ensuring that any licences required for ClimateCare’s operations are paid and up to date
- Have financial oversight for operations ensuring the projects are run in a cost effective manner and to the budgets that you have set.
- Monitor and take responsibility for the costs of the Nairobi Office ensuring costs are controlled and efficiencies achieved.
- You will report to the Director of the Nairobi office, Tom Morton but also have significant interaction with the Financial Controller and CEO in Oxford.
About You

- Experience of generating new business
- Ability to act as an influencer at both governmental and corporate sector
- Ability to write technical and financial proposals
- Good multi-tasking capabilities
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency in MS Office
- A ‘can do’ attitude
- Strong organisation and problem solving skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of the team
- An ability to troubleshoot IT and office hardware problems
- Previous experience in a rapid growth environment desirable
- Outstanding communication and people skills
- Track record of managing and motivating a team
- Experience of working in a customer facing role or on the phone
- Fluency in English
- The ability to explain complex information clearly and simply
- Experience or knowledge of the carbon markets or a knowledge of climate change preferable but not essential
