Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Background: Established in 1989, the company is currently Kenya’s largest vegetable processor which is fully integrated from raw material to finished product, working with several thousands of small scale farmers, exporting premium, niche horticultural products destined for international markets.

The company produces all year round, conforms to internationally recognized food and safety standards; assuring customers of quality, traceability, reliability and service.Overall Purpose: Reporting to the Board, the General Manager will be responsible for the company’s performance and day to day efficient / profitable running of the business.

In addition s/he will be responsible for introducing and implementing new policies and techniques in line with the company’s long-term strategy and ensure continued organic growth, diversification & product development. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Undertaking the business planning and forecasting and taking corrective action to ensure alignment with the Company strategy.


• Ensure there is an effective structure, processes and operational framework to support the implementation of the strategic and business plans.


• Identify new business opportunities, negotiate competitive terms where applicable and ensure appropriate allocation of Company resources in order to enhance productivity and profitability


• Foster high level business partnerships throughout the international markets to achieve and exceed business goals.


• Prepare and control the business’ annual budgets, review financial statements and utilize financial data for the enhancement of profitability in addition to assuming control of the inventory.


• Recommends plans and budgets and conducts activities in accordance with approved plans and budgets.


• Plans and directs research in order to recommend improvement or expansion of operations.


• Coordinates business operations with appropriate organization personnel.


• Reviews and approves sales programs according to organization policies and the formulation of marketing objectives.


• Identify, implement and monitor key performance indicators for the business and managers.


• Streamline operations to coordinate activities and align them to overall group standards.


• Continuously evaluate the sector’s environment and consumer trends and advice on improved strategies to counter competition and other challenges and providing technical input to maintain market leadership and competitiveness.


• Oversee operations including supply chain management, full production planning from raw material to finished products and control including:

1. Production plans


2. Optimum machine utilization.


3. Manpower planning.


4. Cost center analysis.


5. Sales and distribution plans


6. Customer service and deliveries


7. Economic stock holding.


8. Timely debt collection.

• Implement appropriate pricing policies determined by production, market trends and budget requirements.


• Managing operational efficiency and quality control including:

1. Improving plant efficiency and downtime.


2. Material wastage control.


3. Finished product quality inspection.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business or related field and manufacturing experience with at least 10 years’ experience at General Manager level within a manufacturing environment in plant operations and performance management


• Familiarity and knowledge with current trends, practices and metrics in the FMCG sector in the global market including Europe and North America.


• Demonstrated commercial/entrepreneurial acumen.


• A strategic thinker, who will contribute to wider group initiations. Experience in a high volume manufacturing environment where quality and reliability are pre-requisites.


• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and get results through people.


• Excellent organizational skills, communications skills, the ability to multi-task.


• Strong problem solving and analytical abilities at a strategic and functional level


• Previous public, community, and/or Board relations experience beneficial.
