In the past week, I have noticed that many of you are writing in to say that you do not have jobs, and you would like some assistance on how to write a winning cv.
Job opportunities are many and if you follow the simple steps I am going to share with you, you are certainly going to get shortlisted for the jobs you seek.
Before we delve deeper, please note that there are no shortcuts to getting shortlisted. You must send your application; well written CV and Cover Letter.
I say this because I have noticed that some of you post your CVs on our comment sections instead of emailing the prospective employer.
Another thing I’d like to point out is that you must be professional. It is not enough to write an Email to me for example, saying that you have a Bachelor’s Degree in IT and you are looking for a job.
An employer wants to see you go further to explain how you will be of benefit to their company. Send a cover letter worth reading.
Why should an employer employ you? What skills do you have that his/her company benefits from?
Do you have some hands-on experience in the field you are looking to join? All these are the most vital bits of information that the employer needs to see from your application.
Information such as “I am looking for a job to help raise my sister’s school fees” might make the employer sympathize with you, but might not make the employer want to give you a job.
It all bottles down to value addition. You must ask yourself what value you are going to add to a company that will make them want to hire you.
Now back to the unconventional tips that will help you write the best CV; what are these tips?
1. Use the subject Line indicated in the job advertisement
Usually, a job advert will state that you should indicate a certain subject line on your Email title e.g. “Hotel Sales Manager”. Ensure that this is followed.
2. Write a compelling cover letter
There’s a lot that goes into writing a cover letter; ensure that it is both an attachment and part of the email body.
Also ensure that you explain to the employer how you are going to be of value to his company, so that he can give you a job.
A cover letter is very important and if written well, it can land you a job interview almost immediately.
The key is focus on your strengths and skills you can offer the prospective employer.
At the end of the day, that is what employers are looking for; someone who will be of value to their company.
3. Provide a solution or an idea to the company you are looking to join
Many times, I come across applications that are plain and common. They only have work experience information, education background, a brief career objective and referees.
Instead of this, aim at convincing the employer to give you a job based on what are you are bringing to the table.
For example, you could say, “I notice that you do not have social media pages, which are very essential for any company’s success. With my background in Communication and having worked as a social media assistant for Jumia Kenya, I could be of great assistance to the company in ensuring that the company is visible to the online audience and that we reach our main objectives.”
This way, the employer becomes interested in working with you and you getting shortlisted becomes easy!
