With this new and diversified source of income, they can feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, accumulate savings for long-term stability, survive drought and adapt to a changing climate.

About the role


This role will contribute to determining how equitable and innovative BOMA’s programs are as the organization pursues its ambitious scaling strategy. The Gender, Youth, and Social Inclusion Technical Advisor will define approaches and operationalize standards, tools, and practices that promote social inclusion in BOMA’s ongoing and new programs across Africa.


This is a strategic position that will draw upon in-depth technical expertise to develop, implement, and refine adaptations that promote gender-transformative poverty graduation, youth empowerment, and meaningful inclusion of marginalized groups (people with disabilities, the elderly, children). This expertise will also guide the Technical Advisor’s ownership of BOMA’s gender audit and action plan implementation. The successful candidate will have acumen in new partnership, business development, and representation, including engagement with external partners, donors, peer organizations, research institutions, and governments.


In addition to reporting to the Vice President, this is a global telecommuter role, with a preference for candidates located in and legally able to work in Africa or Europe with availability for frequent travel (up to 40%). The position reports to the Vice President of the BOMA Project (who is located in Germany) and will work frequently with colleagues based in BOMA’s Nairobi office.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Application of key technical principles and concepts in gender integration and social behavior change as well as positive youth development and livelihoods, including workforce development and entrepreneurship in program development.

  • Management of gender, youth, and social dynamics assessment, analysis, and related research, and operationalization of a resulting program strategy.

  • Design and adaptation of program approaches that promote gender-responsive and gender-transformative programming in diverse contexts.

  • Program monitoring and evaluation including the development of indicators, data collection tools and methodologies, analysis, and data presentation.

  • Development of successful proposals for donor funding, including technical writing, is required with a particular focus on key donors such as USAID, and World Bank.

  • Design and facilitation of training and learning agendas on gender, youth, and social inclusion.

  • Mentoring, coaching, and support of colleagues (senior, peer, and junior) as well as partners to integrate gender and inclusion principles and best practices into their work.

  • Overall, the successful candidate will split time between (% splits are indicative only):

  • (50%) Provision of technical advice and support to program implementation, including knowledge management, building staff and partner capacity on gender integration and social inclusion, and program quality assurance to ongoing graduation cohorts.

  • (50%) Provision of technical expertise in support of new business and partnership development, including pre-positioning for growth opportunities, coordinating BOMA’s contributions to project designs with NGOs and government partners and serving as lead writer on key opportunities. This includes conducting relevant gender or other social analyses and advising proposal teams on donor requirements around gender, youth, and inclusion.


Does this sound like you?



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Gender Studies, Economics, International Development, or related Social Sciences required. Master’s degree is strongly preferred but will consider candidates with compensating strong work experience.

  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant international work experience, preferably with at least three to five years in an advisory or management role and strong practical experience in gender equality, women’s empowerment, and/or youth employment programming.

  • Experience with community development, livelihoods, humanitarian response, and/or resilience programs. USAID program experience is a plus.

  • Results-driven professional who is able to flex seamlessly between product design and development with a gender focus, program measurement, and evaluation, writing partnership proposals that contribute to fundraising while at the same time also having the credibility to present BOMA’s approach to women’s empowerment to global audiences.

  • Work experience in East and/or West African countries.

  • Flexible, creative, growth-oriented mindset.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as impeccable relationship management skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound judgments.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse teams and effectively communicate new or sensitive topics, including with remote teams.

  • Fluency in English and professional proficiency in French.
