Background:
Garissa County is one of the high risk counties for poliovirus importation. It borders Somalia which has had an ongoing cVDPV2 outbreak since 2018. Large population movements between Somalia and Garissa increase the risk of importation of vaccine preventable disease by refugees from Somalia in the refugee camps and by livestock traders from Mandera, Wajir and Garissa and many regions in Somalia. Additionally, the county has also experienced insecurity in the all the sub-Counties – Fafi, Hulugho, Dadaab – which share a border with Somalia. This has resulted in skilled health workers leaving the border health facilities leading to disruption of services and surveillance networks which had taken many years to create. The insecurity has also disrupted WHO and other partner support to the management teams in these Counties. AFP surveillance activities and performance have declined in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and response activities. Deployment of best available personnel from local areas, who will be able to work and blend with the local authorities and communities, would be one of the solutions at this point in time to facilitate implementation of enhanced surveillance activities to increase the sensitivity of the system
