Trócaire Kenya is implementing the DREAMS Innovation Challenge which is a 2-year (October 2016 – September 2018) project funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and managed by JSI. In this project, Trócaire is working together with four partner organizations (Girl Child Network, LVCT Health, Africa’s Voices Foundation and Grow and Know) to implement a suite of interventions with the overall goal of reducing new HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) by way of keeping girls in secondary school and addressing the underlying access, enrolment and retention issues. The project targets AGYW in rural communities of Siaya County (Sihay and Nyalenya) and the urban informal settlements of Nairobi County (Mukuru and Kangemi) with provision of accelerated education and improved access to age and gender appropriate information and counselling.

Background to the role

Trócaire is looking to hire a research assistant to support the Kenya Girl’s Puberty Book Project. The aim of the project is to develop a book for Kenyan girls aged 10-14 who are transitioning through early puberty into adolescent. The book is an adaptation of a girl’s puberty book that has successfully been developed in partnership with Ministries of Education in five countries to date (Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Madagascar). All of the existing books can be found: http://www.growandknow.org/books.html Included in the puberty book is content on girl’s changing bodies, menstrual hygiene management, and stories collected from adolescent girls. Given the very strong network of individuals and organizations working on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in Kenya already, and the new government guidelines on MHM, the development of a puberty book in Kenya will benefit from the many strong partners and collaborators that exist
