Managing Director (Agriculture) Job in Kenya - 2015





Our Client is an Alliance in the Agricultural Sector currently recruiting a Managing Director

The Managing Director reports directly to the Executive Committee




S/he will also work closely with the Advisory Board, seeking approval for certain financial decisions as well as soliciting its support as big private-sector actors.  



The main duties and responsibilities of the Managing Director as follows:

1. Strategic Leadership and Delivery:



2. Secretariat and Staff Management:


  • Ensure the organizational structure, operational policies, and other business processes are of the highest quality and meet organizational strategic objectives.

  • Manage day-to-day activities of the Secretariat, as well as its budget.

  • Develop a constructive relationship with the Management Team and identify the areas to most effectively use and support them.

  • Serve as a connecting bridge in between Executive board and Secretariat during annual work planning and for staff welfare.

  • Direct and develop staff to ensure all are performing their relevant job functions for their specific projects.

  • Maintain a positive work environment that facilitates collaboration and information sharing and is conducive to attracting, retaining, and motivating diverse talents.

  • Exercise authority over personnel and human resource matters and further strengthen performance management by tracking key performance indicators across departments.


3. Financial Management:


  • In collaboration with the Finance manager, present annual budgets to the Executive Committee and Advisory Board for approval and effective management of resources.

  • Ensure that the financial policies are followed and adhered to at all time.

  • Liaise with the Finance Manager to ensure overall transparency and effective financial management of assets and resources.

  • Ensure proper procurement and finance management procedures are followed.


4. Partner / Stakeholder Engagement:


  • In collaboration with the Partnerships Coordinator, design and implement public-private partnership strategies

  • Represent the Alliance and national partner associations at international industry events and trade fairs.


5. Resource Mobilization and Sustainability:


  • Provide strategic guidance and ideas for resource mobilization.

  • In collaboration with the Projects Office, oversee the development of new funding streams to broaden donor base.

  • Lead membership and sponsorship drive for its annual conference, mobilizing a great number of committed sponsors.

  • Develop new industry service offers on the basis of technical assistance programs, market information, and other services.


6. Working with the Executive Committee and Advisory Board:

The Managing Director is also the secretary to the Executive Committee. 




One of his main functions in this role is to support the EC in its strategic leadership of the organization. 



To do this, the Managing Director will:


  • Spend quality time in training current and new EC elects on policies, regulations, strategy, and roles of the EC in the industry as a whole as well as the work of the Secretariat.

  • Act as a liaison between the EC and the Secretariat staff, as well as important stakeholders, communicating EC decisions.

  • Prepare and submit periodic reports to the Executive Committee on the operational, administrative, and financial aspects and developments in the Secretariat.

  • Ensure that the EC is aware of key strategic and other operational challenges encountered by the Secretariat in the course of its work.

  • Maintain and steer good relationships between the Alliance and its Advisory Board, stirring up their interests to continuously support the organization.


Education and Experience


  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Marketing, Finance, Agribusiness, Business Administration, or a similar discipline.

  • 8+ years’ successful working experience managing a business / business unit or organization.

  • 10+ years’ work experience in agribusiness, finance, or related field.

  • Experience working on international trade issues and trade-related capacity building.

  • Experience with International NGO and Donor organization is desirable


Skills and Abilities


  • Solid understanding of development assistance in Africa

  • Strong advisory and leadership skills

  • Sound report and proposal writing skills

  • Good human relations and resources management skills

  • Additional: Languages (French and Portuguese would be an added advantage)
